The JAM Media team was honored to be invited to the Afro Street Market Fest which took place this year on May 20th at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, GA. The event ,which features local vendors of all kinds, including food, apparel, and accessories, amongst others, took a major strategic leap of faith in comparison to previous years when the event was held at smaller venues.
We remember it like it was yesterday, when drummers and dancers performed in front of the King of the Oyotunji Village at the Ambient+Studio in 2019. Vendors and festival goes were both plentiful and engaged, joining in on dance sessions and giving live review of musicians who had the opportunity to perform as well. There was a feeling in the air, even then, that this would be just the beginning of something big coming from the WOW! Afro Community and that revelation seems to have come true.
While Piedmont Park is typically reserved for organizations considered to be veterans who have organized events and continue to organize for 5+ years, WOW! proves that having aspirations for growth is sometimes all you need. Following the hiatus bestowed upon us by COVID, event planning can sometimes feel like professional hop scotch. We've seen much larger and older organizations cancel events repeatedly this year alone. But, even with the specter of inclement weather looming, WOW! stayed the course and pulled of what we consider to be a milestone event towards the beginning of a very long and successful festival run. It's one of our favorite events and we intend to support them throughout.
Below is a clip from our time meeting with the vendors at the show this year.
